How to Build a Timeless Wardrobe

By The MAISON Edit

A timeless wardrobe is a contradiction. Time does not stand still, and neither does style. But there are pieces — a well-cut trouser, a fine knit, a coat in a classic colour — that remain relevant across years and decades without effort.

The secret, if there is one, is simplicity of silhouette. The pieces that last are the ones that do not try too hard. They are not elaborate. They do not reference a specific moment or trend. They simply exist, doing their job well, season after season.

The core pieces

Every timeless wardrobe begins with the same foundation: a few pieces of knitwear in neutral colours, one or two pairs of well-cut trousers, a coat that works in most climates, and a selection of plain-coloured basics. From this foundation, everything else is addition.

On quality vs. cost

The relationship between quality and cost is real but not absolute. Price is not a reliable proxy for quality. The most reliable indicator of quality is longevity: buy something that will last ten years, and you have made a good investment regardless of the price.

The editing process

A wardrobe becomes timeless through editing, not accumulation. Every season, remove what you have not worn. Not with guilt, but with gratitude for what it taught you about your own taste. The wardrobe that remains is closer to who you are.
